Practice Makes PASSing

You may have heard the saying, “Practice Makes Perfect.”  Well, for the bar exam, this saying does NOT apply.

Instead, we go by the mantra, “Practice Makes Perfect Passing”

For your bar exam prep, perfect is NOT the goal.  A’s are NOT the goal.  B’s are NOT the goal.  Even C’s are NOT the goal.

The goal is not perfection; far from it.

To pass the bar exam you need to demonstrate ‘minimal competency’ only.  That’s bare minimum.  The bare bones.  D IS the goal.  A score of 65.

What’s the best way to accomplish that?  Two ways:

1) Focus on achieving minimal competency, not perfection.

You don’t need to know ALL the rules, know how ALL the law works, and write it ALL out in an ALL-out perfect format.

All you need is minimum competency.

MINIMUM COMPETENCY

Minimum Competency means you know how to use the facts, apply it to the law, organize your essay answer, and know some of the rules.  That’s it.

How do you get there?

2) By PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Practice the exam in your mind.  Practice the exam on paper.  Practice it over and over.

Take practice tests.  Do them under timed conditions.  Take more practice tests.  It’s a mindset.  It’s an action item.  If you take the practice tests, read the sample answers (Not the model ones on the bar website!), and LEARN from your mistakes, you’re going to kick that bar exam booty out of the park!

So remember, just establish minimal competency and take lots and lots of practice exams under timed conditions.  I can’t tell you how important this is.  Ok, actually I can.  I’ll even say more about practice in a separate blog post!

Hi Daisy,

I went with barbri, and did not hire a tutor. For sample answers, I used the barbri books, provided with the program to review my answers. I think this is the best way. If you did not go with the barbri program or a tutor, getting a barbri practice essay book will help a lot. It would be well worth the price, and you can find them on Amazon, like this one: http://amzn.to/KjTpvq

If not, you can also go the bar website and look at model answers. These are not the best to compare to because they are very good, and you don’t need to be nearly that good. If you’re in California, those are located here: http://admissions.calbar.ca.gov/Examinations/PastExams.aspx

I hope this helps and best of luck!
