Laughter and Your Bar Exam

by Dustin on

By this time, you are probably feeling a little bit stressed about your bar exam… ok, probably a lot stressed.  Hey, it’s normal and you’re certainly not the only one.  In fact, if you’re not feeling a little bit of stress, you might not be preparing well enough!

Through the bar exam, it’s not so much about eliminating stress as it is about managing stress.

One of the best ways to manage stress is to look no further than the best medicine: Laughter.

Laughter has been said to be the best medicine for a multitude of reasons.  Science has demonstrated that laughter heals and helps with stress.  In fact, in a famous study, scientists studied people with clinical depression and found that by the patients simply smiling at themselves in the mirror on a consistent basis, they were able to rid themselves of depression.

Three Ways to use Laughter for Bar Exam stress:

  1. Laugh out loud for no reason – Laugh while you’re driving or in the shower and do it just because. After about five minutes, you will notice a mood change.
  2. Do the smile therapy – Spend ten minutes per day looking at yourself in the mirror with a nice, big smile.  By the end of the week, you won’t know how you on earth you were actually stressed out before.
  3. Watch a funny television show several times per week – I recommend Colbert or Jon Stewart

If laughter is the best medicine, then start using it more proactively. How do you deal with bar exam stress?  Leave a comment below.
